The backboard had long ago vanished from this machine, there was a rather grotty piece of plywood attached when I got it.
The above shot shows the surround in place and fixed at the front. It is all solid mahogany, the backboard itself is over two and a half inches thick, quite weighty. The front fixings whilst looking very simple actually do two things, obviously hold the side rails down, but also provide tension to the backboard (base) itself which has two brass pads inset into it (not shown). The reason being that you cannot contain a piece of wood across the grain, something has to give due to swelling and shrinking, this allows the wood to move instead of splitting.
The dovetails are simply a slide in fit, not glued, as it is easier then if this has to be moved it all comes apart. There will be a pair of bolts to secure the rear of the surround down, and lock together the dovetails (one each end) The rear board is tongued into the backboard.
It all looks a bit pale right now, but it has yet to be treated in any way, eventually it will be french polished. Please ignore the clutter, well its my study so I do as I please......
Its April fools day, so hoping this isn't a bad omen. I finished the top today, with one exception, a quite large hole needs to go in the backboard for the drive belts, but this will have to wait until I have the flywheel mounted to get the correct location.
This was my approach to securing both the dovetails and holding the whole thing down in one go, it necessitated drilling through the center of the dovetails and through the base board as well, a total of eight inches, so I made a D bit up for the job, worked very well and came out tother end spot on target.
A couple of nice knurled thumb screws never to be seen being behind the machine for the rest of eternity.
And that's it, looks quite presentable I think, it will of course look a lot different once the top has been finished and polished etc.
